Week 38 in review: Samsung, Xiaomi and Meizu bring new smartphones

A few interesting announcements took place in week 38 and three of those came courtesy of Samsung - the first mid-ranger with a triple camera Galaxy A7 (2018) and a couple of entry-level devices in Galaxy J4+ and Galaxy J6+. Meanwhile Xiaomi gave us two more members of the Mi 8 family - the Mi 8 Lite and Mi 8 Pro, while Meizu gave us four new handsets - the 16X, the X8 and the V8 duo. Meanwhile OnePlus was a prominent feature in our rumor mill with its 6T flagship, along with Xiaomi and its upcoimng Redmi Note 6 Pro mid-ranger. . Google Pixel 2’s issue with audio in video recordings fixed in Android 8.1 DP2

Among the list of Pixel 2 issues uncovered shortly after its launch, was one that resulted in poor audio quality in recorded videos. The problem was officially acknowledged, with Google saying a fix is incoming. And here it is - the fix is included in the latest Android 8.1 developer preview. The following videos clearly show the problem has been taken care of - first one is made with a Pixel 2 unit running Android 8.0 and the next with a phone running Android 8.1 DP2. Samsung Galaxy J3 (2017) runs GFXBench to have even more specs revealed

A couple of days ago we spotted the still-unannounced Galaxy J3 (2017) in the online database of Geekbench, and as usual this meant we were able to share some of its specs with you. However, Geekbench is far from having the most complete info screen for devices that run it, so there were still a lot of things up in the air. Not so anymore, though, because now the same J3 (2017), with the same SM-J330 model number, has also been put through the paces of GFXBench. Xiaomi, vivo and Oppo see massive gains in India as the smartphone market contracts for the first time

Canalys has outed the numbers for the Indian smartphone market for the second quarter of the year, April to June that is. And for the first time ever, the overall market is contracting, as shipments fell 4% compared to Q2 2016. Just under 27 million smartphones were sold in the subcontinent in Q2 of this year. Samsung leads the pack in market share, with 25%, but its lead is ever more threatened by a bunch of Chinese device makers. Xiaomi, for example, is in second place now, managing to quadruple its shipments to 4.8 million units compared to the year-ago quarter. vivo broke its...



New Asus Zenfone 2 update brings Android for Work support

Asus has started rolling out a new update to its Zenfone 2 (ZE551ML) smartphone that bumps the firmware version number to 2.20.40.164. and brings along support for Android for Work as well as fixes to several issues and stability-related improvements. As per the release notes, the update fixes issues related to video sound, SmartBox, phone hang-up, SDcard, and PosteMobile NFC. Plus, it also fixes the google play stop service, issue of displaying wrong operator name when roaming and searching network as well as an issue with YouTube volume while using miracast. (more…)
