Hydrogen One is a $1,200 smartphone that’s modular and features holographic display

High-end professional camera maker Red has announced its plans to enter the smartphone market. In fact, the company has sort-of unveiled their first offering: Hydrogen One. The USP of the device is that it features a holographic display. "It is no longer necessary to carry (or charge) another device to enjoy multi-dimensional content," the company says, adding that the device features "nanotechnology that seamlessly switches between traditional 2D content, holographic multi-view content, 3D content and interactive games." The device runs Android. Red says there's a proprietary...

Weekly poll results: HTC U11 sizzles with fan love

HTC has rediscovered itself multiple times now, though never quite returning to its peak days. The HTC U11 could be the phone that turns it around - we liked it and you liked it too. In fact, the vote in last week's poll went 70/30 in favor of the new flagship - a merger of HTC 10's perfectionism and U Ultra's user focused customization. As expected, the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack proved to be a point of contention, but HTC does provide an adapter in the box. The Xiaomi Mi 6 got away with it and this adapter seems to have pleased most HTC fans. HTC U11's unique features - the...

Samsung Galaxy S8 duo smashes pre-order records in Korea

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smashed pre-order records in its home country - more than 550,000 units were booked in two days. That's more than 5 times the S7 pre-orders (around 100,000) and nearly triple what the Galaxy Note7 got (200,000, a record in itself). Pre-orders will last until April 17 (by then the number may reach a cool million) and there are a whopping 3,000 stores across the country carrying the S8. Samsung sweetened the pot by offering a free Bluetooth speaker or a KRW 400,000 gift card. An official from a local store reports that 80%-90% of visitors were there to...

Weekly poll results: Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ loved equally

Last week we asked you if you prefer the Samsung Galaxy S8 or the bigger Galaxy S8+ and the opinions seem very evenly split - the S8 won with 52% to 48%, a very narrow margin indeed. The primary difference between these two is the size (and, well, price). Sure, the plus model has a bigger battery, but that brings only a minor bump in endurance (our testing showed 84h for the S8 and 88h for the S8+). Normally, the smaller phone outsells the bigger one and we wondered if this will be even more true this year seeing how the Galaxy S8 already has a bigger screen than its predecessor...

Huawei quietly launches MediaPad M5 lite tablet with four speakers, 10.1-inch display

Without any fuss, Huawei added a mid-range tablet on its website - the MediaPad M5 lite. It boasts an aluminum unibody and a quartet of speakers. The MediaPad M5 lite is built around a 10.1-inch 16:10 display with 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution and it's driven by a rather outdated Kirin 659 SoC. The memory variants are two - 3GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB. The iconic feature, however, appears to be the quad Harman/Kardon-tuned loudspeakers that work with Huawei's Histen 5.0 sound system to mimic 3D surround sound. An ample 7,500 mAh battery ensures long multimedia and gaming sessions,...
