Users running the iOS 12.1 beta 1 on their iPhone XS and XS Max devices discovered an option to control focus depth while taking a picture. On the currently available stable version of the OS, Apple has made the feature available only after the photo was taken.
Apple has confirmed that a future iOS update will bring the slider control directly to the camera app so you will have the option of previewing the background blur even before snapping the photo.
