The Qualcomm X50 modem promises stunning speeds of 5Gbps, but it will need the right antennas to get there. The company just unveiled its first antennas for millimeter wave and for sub-6GHz communication. What's the difference? Millimeter wave operates at very high frequencies - the QTM052 antenna works above 26GHz and even in the 37-40GHz range and it can receive up to 800MHz of bandwidth. That's how you get to 5Gbps transfer speeds. The antenna itself is tiny and it needs to be. Qualcomm envisions up to 4 of them inside smartphones. Together with the X50 modem, they support beam...

Lenovo made the K8 Note official for India earlier this month, but that isn't the only member of the K8 series that the Chinese company has planned. In fact, the K8 Plus was spotted in a benchmark a few weeks back, but apparently there will be a third phone in this line too. A new unconfirmed rumor says the Lenovo K8 and K8 Plus will both arrive in India at some point during the second half of September. That's the time frame for their actual availability - the launch event will reportedly take place "by mid-September", so it's only a matter of weeks now, at most. Unfortunately that's...
Chinese manufacturer OnePlus has started pushing out a new OxygenOS Open Beta update (24/15) to its OnePlus 3 and 3T smartphones. The update in question brings along a handful of changes, prime among them being fix for the Blueborne vulnerability. For those who aren't aware, the vulnerability allows a remote attacker to take control of devices via Bluetooth. What's scary is that the process does not even require the device being attacked to be paired to the attacker's device, or even to be set on discoverable mode. BlueBorne affects mobile, desktop, as well as IoT operating systems,...
The semiconductor business is getting into a new phase of takeovers. While Qualcomm was ready to purchase NXP for $47 billion ($37 billion value + $10 billion existing debt), it was surprised with a bid from Broadcom that reached $121 billion. In a bold move, the San Diego company decided to boost its offer for NXP from $110 per share to $127.50 per share, or a total of $44 billion value. Qualcomm's presiding board director Tom Horton said the acquisition "enables Qualcomm to accelerate its growth strategy". The deal already has support from major shareholders at the Dutch...
