vivo V5 PlusA couple of days ago we saw the then-unannounced vivo V5 Plus going up for pre-order prematurely in Malaysia, and today the new smartphone has been officially unveiled. The V5 Plus comes with many upgrades compared to the V5 from 2016, but what vivo seems to be most proud of is the dual front camera arrangement, with 20 MP + 8 MP resolution and “selfie softlight” flash.

The 20 MP snapper in there uses Sony’s IMX376 1/2.78″ sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 5P lens system, while the 8 MP f/2.0 camera captures depth information. This will make bokeh effects easily attainable, keeping faces sharp while blurring the background. Yes, just like what Portrait Mode does on the iPhone 7 Plus – but remember, this is the front-facing camera setup we’re talking about here. You can also refocus shots even after they’re captured, adding blurring effects wherever you want. (more…)

3D renders of the Samsung Galaxy S8

Galaxy S8There are many rumors about the Samsung Galaxy S8 but it can be hard to tell which are credible. A case maker (which prefers to remain anonymous) sent us 3D renders of the S8 based on accurate schematics.

They are only three images but tell plenty. First off, Samsung has taken the “edge” design forward, the side curves of the display are much more pronounced, pushing the bezels out of sight. Something else was kicked off the front – the Home key. That was moved on screen and the fingerprint reader it used to house was pushed under the glass. (more…)

HTC U Ultra with Snapdragon 821, 5.7″ QHD display

HTC U UltraHTC just announced the U Ultra smartphone at a keynote filled with U puns. The personal touch is all over the place, with a brand new Sense Companion assistant taking center stage.

But before we try to make some sense out of this Sense Companion, let’s cover the best bit about the U Ultra – it’s covered in Sapphire glass. What Apple tried and couldn’t achieve (out of yield constraints, admittedly), HTC has done on its new flagship. The huge catch here is that the Sapphire will be limited to an exclusive edition to be launched later in the year. (more…)
